How to Prepare Your Home for a Major Remodel

How to Prepare Your Home for a Major Remodel

Starting a major renovation project is exciting, but the process of living through it requires preparation. A well-prepared home and family can significantly reduce stress, speed up the timeline, and minimize the impact of construction dust and noise. At Sunny Ridge Construction, we pride ourselves on making the construction phase as smooth and respectful as possible. Here is our essential checklist for getting your house ready for a remodel built to stand the test of time.

Creating a Safe and Accessible Workspace

Before our team even steps foot inside, clearing the designated work zone is critical.

  • Clear the Path: Ensure all interior and exterior paths leading to the work area are clear of obstacles, decorations, and fragile items. We need space for equipment and material deliveries.
  • Remove Valuables and Breakables: Take down any wall decor, mirrors, or shelving near the construction zone. Even sealed-off areas can experience vibration. Remove all contents from cabinets, closets, and drawers in the room being remodeled. We recommend storing these items off-site or in a safe, dust-free area of your home.
  • Secure Pets and Children: Construction zones are inherently unsafe. Arrange a plan to keep pets securely away from the work area and ensure children understand the boundaries of the construction zone.

Dust Control and Protection Measures

Dust is the enemy of a peaceful renovation. While we at Sunny Ridge Construction use professional dust barriers and ventilation methods, a few extra steps on your end can make a huge difference.

  • Seal HVAC Vents: Temporarily cover and tape off any HVAC supply and return vents in the room being remodeled and adjacent rooms to prevent construction dust from circulating through your entire central air system.
  • Protect Furniture: If nearby furniture cannot be removed, cover it completely with plastic sheeting or heavy drop cloths. Pay special attention to items in open areas immediately outside the demolition zone.
  • Create a Temporary Living Space (If Applicable): If we are remodeling your kitchen or main bathroom, plan for a temporary kitchen setup and designate an alternate bathroom. This foresight, a key component of practical planning, will minimize disruption.

Final Walkthrough

Before demolition begins, we will schedule a final walkthrough with your Sunny Ridge Construction project manager. We use our proven building methods to review the plans, confirm material placements, and address any last-minute questions.

  • Identify Utilities: Point out the locations of main shut-off valves for water, electrical panels, and gas lines, ensuring our team can quickly access them in an emergency.
  • Document Existing Conditions: While we take our own photos, you should also document the condition of areas adjacent to the remodel.
