Case Study: Home Addition - Secure Firearms Storage Room

When a law enforcement officer reached out about building a dedicated room to safely store his firearms, the project in Auburn, PA called for something well beyond a standard gun safe. The goal was to construct a vault-grade room, built to a much higher security standard than a typical home safe room or closet conversion.
The room itself was built with 10-inch concrete walls and a 12-inch concrete roof. Once the concrete shell was complete, a Homeland Security-rated vault door was installed, the same caliber of door used in high-security facilities. The door alone weighed approximately 500 pounds, requiring careful planning and the right equipment to ensure proper mounting and smooth operation.
Because the room was sealed so tightly on all sides with concrete, climate control needed special attention. Concrete rooms like this one can trap moisture, which poses a real risk for long-term firearms storage. To address this, a dedicated dehumidifier was added to the HVAC system, keeping humidity levels consistently in check and protecting the firearms inside from corrosion or rust over time.
The finished room delivers exactly what the homeowner needed: a secure, climate-controlled space built to handle the demands of long-term firearms storage with the structural integrity of a true vault. From the concrete specifications to the door selection to the added humidity control, every detail was built around the specific security and storage requirements of the project.
This type of build highlights the kind of specialized construction work that goes beyond standard home renovation, combining structural engineering, security hardware, and climate control into a single, purpose-built space.
