How to Maintain Your New Deck: A Seasonal Guide

A beautiful deck built by Sunny Ridge Construction is a perfect spot for relaxation and entertaining, designed using proven building methods and high-quality materials to last for years. However, even the most durable deck needs regular attention to maintain its beauty and structural integrity against the sun, rain, and snow. Following a simple, seasonal maintenance routine is the key to ensuring your investment truly stands the test of time.
Spring: The Post-Winter Deep Clean
After the snow melts and spring arrives, it’s time to assess and clean. This is the most crucial step for the longevity of your deck.
Thorough Cleaning
Sweep away all debris (leaves, dirt, sticks). For wood or composite decking, use a specialized deck cleaner. We recommend a gentle, dedicated deck cleaner and a soft-bristle brush. Avoid high-pressure washers, as they can damage wood fibers, score composite surfaces, and void warranties. If you do use a pressure washer, use the lowest setting and maintain a distance of at least one foot.
Inspect for Damage
Check the entire structure, including railings, steps, joists, and support posts. Look for loose screws or nails (secure them immediately), signs of rot (on wood decks), or insect activity. Address any issues immediately before they become structural problems.
Summer: Addressing Wear and Tear
Summer is high-use season, meaning more wear, spills, and UV exposure.
Spot Cleaning
Address spills immediately, especially those from grease, barbecue sauces, or drinks that can stain wood or certain composites.
Surface Refinishing (Wood Decks Only)
If your deck is wood and is starting to look faded or splintered, summer is the ideal time to re-seal or re-stain. This is crucial for protecting the wood from moisture absorption. Ensure the wood is completely dry before applying a high-quality sealant.
Autumn: Preparing for the Freeze
The goal of fall maintenance is to prepare the deck for winter moisture and ice.
Remove Debris
Clear all leaves and debris completely, especially between deck boards. Standing debris holds moisture and can lead to staining, mildew, and rot over the winter. Ensure gutters above the deck are clear to prevent water overflow.
Storage
Store all furniture, planters, and barbecues inside or cover them completely. This prevents rust marks, minimizes weathering on your items, and prevents moisture from being trapped beneath them, which can damage the deck surface.
Winter: Protecting Against Ice
Winter requires minimal effort but maximum caution.
Avoid Rock Salt
Never use rock salt or calcium chloride-based ice melt on your deck, as these chemicals can damage both wood and composite surfaces. We recommend using a shovel with a plastic edge or a magnesium chloride-based de-icer sparingly.
Keep It Clear
Try to clear heavy snow loads off the deck promptly to prevent excessive weight and trapped moisture.
